We call our driver team: “Companion Drivers”. Companions first, drivers second, because this is so much more than driving. As a Companion Driver, you’re not just taking riders from point A to B, you’re connecting the core functions of our community for folks who need a little extra help. The little extra support Companion Drivers provide goes a long way toward our rider’s independence, dignity, and connection.
Los Angeles is a city full of life, activity, and opportunity—but for our riders, it can also be isolating and difficult to navigate. For older adults and individuals with mild mobility challenges, this is especially true. Long blocks, busy intersections, and limited public transit can make getting around a challenge. That’s where we come in.

Companion Rides are Onward’s assisted Door-Through-Door™ rideshare service. These rides are not just about transporting someone from one place to another—they’re about supporting a rider every step of the way.
As a Companion Driver, you will:

Greet riders at their front door (or inside their building if assistance is requested).

Offer a steady arm, helping riders navigate curbs, stairs, and obstacles along their way and help carry items if needed.

Assist riders in safely entering and exiting the vehicle.

Escort riders into their destination, such as a medical office or grocery store entrance, and check in if needed. *At medical appointments, you’ll stop at the check in desk

Ensure the rider is settled and secure before ending the trip.

Understand that sometimes riders will want to chat and sometimes they won’t - and be fine with either.
This kind of support can make a profound difference in the life of someone who may be recovering from surgery, managing mobility limitations, or dealing with loneliness.

WHO DOES ONWARD SERVE?
Our riders are typically older adults or individuals who have mild mobility or cognitive challenges. As a Companion Driver, you’ll help them live fuller lives. Companion Drivers help riders to medical appointments, family gatherings, social events, and everyday activities like going to the grocery store. You’ll become a trusted community member, a source of support, and in some cases a friend. Onward partners with Health Systems, Transit Agencies, Municipalities, Senior Living Communities and more, so riders will be navigating to various outings and activities.
